Who We Are

We’re not a franchise. We’re a family-owned and operated business focusing on the educational well-being of the children in our local community since 2013.

What Makes Us Different

That Tutoring Place was founded by a Washington State teacher who saw the glaring need for a supplemental education program. She set out to create a personalized, one-on-one tutoring service with three goals in mind: Listen, Teach, and Encourage.

Our individual tutoring programs are designed with learning strategies specific to the student’s needs. We also create a partnership with the child’s parents and teachers to form a circle of support and accountability.

And every program includes homework assistance and study skills, which are essential to overcoming learning challenges.

As teachers ourselves, we truly care about your child’s education and promise to do all we can to ensure their success.

WE LISTEN

Every child’s learning journey is unique, so we make a point to listen to their struggles to create just the right tutoring plan.

WE TEACH

With attention focused on the student, the tutor can fully engage in their learning activities, working with them on the best way to learn and understand the subject matter.

WE ENCOURAGE

Just hearing the words “You did that right!” to a frustrated student goes a long way.

My Story

Carrie St. Marie

Teacher and Founder of That Tutoring Place

"The number one question we're asked by our students is 'Did I do that right?' Often all a tutor needs to say is 'Yes' or 'Good job!' and the progress begins."

Teaching is in my genes. My mom is a former 4th-grade teacher at both public and private schools. Her mother, aunt, and many cousins were also teachers, plus one of my sisters became a high school history teacher.

I graduated with a Science major and Math minor and am licensed to teach 6-12th grade for both subjects. I first taught Math and then went on to also teach Science. I taught off and on while raising my four boys. If I wasn’t teaching, I was coaching. I coached mostly track and field (throwing events) as well as volleyball and basketball.

During my last teaching position, I found myself working with students more one-on-one. I witnessed how much confidence and success they experienced by having a person just sit with them and tell them they are doing everything correctly. So, I began private tutoring. I drove everywhere and worked with students of all ages and all subjects. I used the time to develop my unique method of teaching SAT skills. In January 2013, a colleague asked if I wanted to take over a tutoring business that had closed. The rest is history.

At first, all the employees were family members. Two of my sons tutored and my mom helped with office management. There have been many tutors come and go over the years, but it has always been a family atmosphere. We care about our students and their families. I like to watch students play in sporting events, perform at concerts, and act in plays. Many students that have graduated attended tutoring for over seven years.

Students come, learn, and leave confident. Plus, we serve chips and cookies. 😉

In-Person Tutoring vs. Online

Online tutoring is popular, especially after the onset of the global pandemic. But in-person socialization has immeasurable benefits both short and long-term. We encourage parents to come to our learning center with their child to reinforce that personal connection and build social skills, as well as help their child's academic education.

Personal Connection

In-person tutoring offers more individualized attention as your student is there making a connection with their tutor. It is easier for the tutor to learn more about your child and how they learn best.

PROBLEM DISCOVERY

In-person tutors can see signals your child gives that wouldn't be detectable online and further help them open up about any problems they may be having with their school work.

Positive reinforcement

The number one question we get from a student is, "Did I do that right?" Often all a tutor needs to say is “Yes” and “Good job!” and the progress begins.

Increased accountability

We've found it is easier for a student to learn and stay motivated to learn when there is a tutor to check in with on a consistent basis.
